About the Programme

Renowned Cantonese Opera actor Sun Kim-long is invited to introduce the design and architectural features of the traditional Chinese Opera bamboo theatre.  Budding actors and actresses are also invited to perform two Cantonese Opera excerpts, providing the opportunity to step into the bamboo theatre, appreciate the splendid performances of Cantonese Opera, and truly experience its charm.

About the Artist

Sun Kim-long
Mr. Sun Kim-long began his apprenticeship under the Cantonese Opera master Wu Gongxia during the 60s; he also studied martial arts from the Xu Junhan.  He became popular in the eighties in the Singapore and Malaysian region.

Besides having extensive stage experience, Sun recorded numerous albums with his impressive singing voices in recent years.  He also actively involves in Cantonese Opera promotion and productions, which includes Seven Filial Kins, Assault on the Red Light, Kublai Khan, Madame Butterfly, Jade Hairpin, The Wife and the Concubine, and Eighteen Arhats Taming the Golden Condor.  He formed Xin Feng Huang Cantonese Opera Troupe with Nam Fung, and Xin Hui Huang Cantonese Opera Troupe in 2001 and 2002 respectively and in 2001, he wrote his first work of Cantonese Opera, Reflection of Beauties in Lotus Pond.  He produced a new work, Madame Butterfly in 2003 and wrote The Green Jade Haripin in 2004.  He wrote many scripts and his recent works include The Heroes of Tang and Pearl Flag. 

Sun is currently vice chairman of the Chinese Artist Association of Hong Kong, board members of the Cantonese Opera Development Fund Advisory Committee and the Cantonese Opera Advisory Committee.  Sun has also won the Commendation award from the Home Affairs Bureau in 2009 and awarded the Medal of Honour (MH) by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2019.
