M09 | Conservation DIY (Completed)parent

Programme 1: Exploring Paints on Artefacts

Paints are used on many artefacts such as paintings, sculptures, works on paper and mixed media, which can give rise to specific conservation problems. In this workshop, the conservators will introduce the various types of paints, their common problems and also their preservation measures and treatment methods, enabling students to gain a better understanding of heritage conservation. In addition, the students will experience preparing and painting with egg tempera, a classical medium used in Western paintings.

Programme 2: Copy and Paste - The Production of Clay Print Libretti

Before the widespread adoption of photocopiers, mass production of libretti was inhibited.  The number of libretti produced depends on the scale of the troupe and the cast of the play.  Libretti in Cantonese Opera used to be produced in 4 different ways, namely hand copying, clay printing, stencil printing and stereotype printing.  Among these printing methods, clay printing was the simplest and the most cost-effective method, and therefore prevailed throughout the 1930s and 1970s.  In this workshop, students can learn the techniques of clay printing and the skills of making a museum standard mount through our exercises.
