Class 7A Drama Group

Class 7A Drama Group is a local professional theatre group funded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.  The group is good at performing with a minimalist and unrestrained way based on quality texts.  It focuses on the most compelling part of the play and highlights the most 'theatrical' and 'dramatic' elements which move the audience to generate an experience that cannot be obtained from other forms of media; it also puts the impact of the theatre into full play.  Some of its recent productions are the musicals Love at First Snow, The Gallants for 2021 'International Arts Carnival', Ya can Breathe!!, The Big Happy Dying, 2097: A Fairy Tale of Two Cities, The Statute of Magic for 2018 'International Arts Carnival', the musicals Love to Forget, daddi, etc.  In addition to performing, the group is also a pioneer in merging theatrical methods to the instruction of formal academic subjects including Chinese Language, English Language, History, General Studies, Liberal Studies, Moral Studies, Humanities, Project Week and Other Learning Experiences in the new Senior Secondary Curriculum.  The group has served more than 100 schools and has been dedicated to the development of educational theatre for learning of classical Chinese literature through drama in recent years.

Class 7A Drama Group has been successfully producing performances and pre-performance talks of Interpretation of Classical Chinese Literature through Drama since as early as 2015/16 by adopting classical Chinese essays and presenting them as dramas.  By doing so, Class 7A Drama Group has been bringing students the artistic experience which can not only help them learn classical Chinese, but also allow them to appreciate theatre.  The initiative was enthusiastically received by participating teachers and students alike.  They thought that it could help them acquire an in-depth understanding of the essays in the curriculum and was obviously beneficial for classical Chinese learning.  Some teachers clearly expressed their wish for the group to produce more plays explaining classical Chinese to help deepen students' interest and knowledge in the area.  The group has invited Dr Lui Pui as the project's language consultant.  The curriculum and script of this programme would be created by the group's Artistic Director Dr Leung Shing-him (aka Yatyau).  The pre-performance talk enables students to grasp the main points of the chosen classical Chinese essays.  Professional actors would be demonstrating and explaining the contents to enhance the educational impact of the play.

Programme Content

Performances in Interpretation of Classical Chinese Literature through Drama IV will be based on three of the recommended passages of the classical Chinese essays under the new Senior Secondary Curriculum for Chinese Language, namely The Anecdotes of the Respectful Elder Zuo Zhongyi (《左忠毅公軼事》), Pre-Battle Memorandum to His Majesty (《出師表》) and My First Visit to the Western Hill (《始得西山宴遊記》).  Complemented by contemporary and minimalist stage treatment, the classical Chinese texts are vividly and stereoscopically presented on stage.  As students are exposed to theatrical art, they are at the same time 'reading' the three important designated classical Chinese essays in a lively manner, while teachers may also use the drama as a focal point for classroom instruction.
