Highlights and Objectives

  • A school-year-long project on Cantonese opera for primary schools which are interested in Cantonese opera
  • Teaches four skills of Cantonese opera (singing, body movement, speech and martial arts) in an easy manner and enhances students' understanding and interest in Cantonese opera
  • Features introductory performances, Cantonese opera workshops, fringe activities and performances
  • Participating students will perform Baoer, a newly adapted Cantonese opera for children, in the finale performance at a professional performance venue.

Content

As a traditional regional genre of Chinese operas, Cantonese opera comprises art elements such as literature, music and dance.  This project aims to guide students in understanding Cantonese opera and aesthetics of traditional Chinese operas, so as to nurture a sense of Chinese culture.

Baoer, the finale performance of the project, is a story about Baoer who pursues for dreams and promotes the important Chinese values such as benevolence, love, filial piety and loyalty.

Phase 1:
Cantonese Opera Appreciation and Introductory Performance (1 performance)

September to October 2022

Through appreciation and live introductory performances, students and teachers will experience Cantonese opera in an interactive manner.

Phase 2:
Cantonese Opera Training Workshop (30 sessions)

October 2022 to June 2023

Operatic Singing and Body Movement (15 sessions)
Students will learn basic performing techniques of Cantonese opera, such as vocalization, stylised body movement and posture.

Bazi Training (15 sessions)
Students will learn fundamental skills with bazi, a widely-adopted stage weapons in Cantonese opera.

Phase 3:
Public Performance

June and July 2023

Community Performance of Cantonese opera (1 performance)
Participating students will perform Cantonese opera in social welfare organisations located in the neighborhood of their schools for the enjoyment of the community.

Joint School Finale Performance (1 performance)
Participants will take an active part in the finale performance that will be held at a professional performance venue. Students will be equipped with professional costumes, make-up, props and have live music accompaniment for the performance. 

Fringe Activities 

January to June 2023

Demonstration Workshop on Cantonese opera Make-up (1 session)
Professional Cantonese opera make-up artists will provide an interactive demonstration workshop on stage make-up.

Demonstration Workshop on Costume Wearing (1 session)
Students will have a chance to dress-up with Cantonese opera costumes of different roles and experience the art.

Programme DetailsThe performance will mainly comprise group performances, including group demonstrations of martial art, singing xiaoqu (folk music) and a new Cantonese Opera for children, 'Baoer', which is newly written by Ms Leung Sum-yee. The story is about Baoer who pursues for dreams and promotes the important Chinese values such as benevolence, love, filial piety and loyalty.
