Class 7A Drama Group Limited is a local professional theatre group receiving a Two-Year Grant from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, good at presenting the most enjoyable performances based on high quality scripts and literature. With simple interpretation techniques, the group portrays the "taste" and "power" of drama, offering unparalleled theatrical experiences and impact. The latest productions of Class 7A Drama Group are Mother Courage in China, Interpretation of Classical Chinese Literature through Drama, Love to Forget, Macbeth 2.0, Texts Re-experimenting Series, daddi, The Memorandum, Macbeth in Macao and SEVEN:Lost and Lust. In addition, the group pioneers drama as a teaching tool with teaching formal school subjects. Serving more than a hundred schools, this programme spans various subjects, including Chinese, English, general studies, liberal studies, moral education, humanities, special features of the week and Other Learning Experiences under New Senior Secondary Curriculum.

The elective modules in Chinese Language of the Senior Secondary Curriculum are put in place to enhance students’ language competency on various aspects through a diversified array of materials and teaching activities. Amongst these elective modules, “Masterpieces and Adapted Film and Television Programmes” emphasises on nurturing students’ “abilities to feel, analyse, appreciate, and critique masterpieces, so as to enhance their tastes and cultural attainments”[ Education Bureau: Curriculum and Assessment Guidelines for Chinese Language (F4 – F6) (revised in November 2015).]. Such high-level linguistic competence is not much covered in other modules. In this programme, a comparative study will be made between literature and the corresponding adapted film and television production. Participants will study the similarities and differences in the aspects of presentation, theme, focus, adaptation and reconstruction, etc. By analysing the pros and cons of the above, the uniqueness across different artistic disciplines can be effectively and concretely demonstrated, from which students could delve into and master the features and aesthetics of literary art.

Dr. Ng Mei-kwan is invited to be the Chinese language consultant of the programme, which is designed by the company’s artistic director. Students are briefed about the main points of adaptation for different media at the pre-performance talk. Live demonstration by and sharing of professional actors will supplement the talk. The play is adapted from three masterpieces in Chinese literature, which can offer students contents to support their language learning as much as it is an artistic experience for appreciating drama.

Literary Classics and their Adaptations into Theatre comprises of three pieces adapted from Chinese literary masterpieces: the marvel tale “Painted Skin” from Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio by Pu Songling;Romance of the Three Kingdoms – one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature written by Luo Guanzhong, and a few novels and proses by Xiao Hong. The company adapts and rehearses excerpts from these three stories and handles the performance with a simplistic stage. The stories will be stereoscopically presented on stage, so that students can understand the similarities and differences of the same work shown in different media. On top of exposing students to theatrical art, the programme also provides an entry point for teacher’s instruction.
