Contents

This programme aims to cultivate students' sense of rhythm, not only in music but also as an aesthetic experience. Percussion serves as the foundation for rhythm training. Through systematic practice, students will enhance their sensitivity to and control of musical rhythm.

Workshops focus on three core areas: (i) Internal beat – maintaining a steady pulse mentally; (ii) External synchronization – keeping time with accompaniment, and (iii) Integration of movement and music – combining physical actions with sound. The arts group will guide students from "exploring sound" to body percussion and object-based exploration, leading to creative exercises in composition and arrangement.

Training projects will be tailored to each school's available instruments (e.g., marimba, tambourine, drums) and student interest. Using spaces such as home economics rooms, design & technology rooms, playgrounds, and auditoriums, students will observe, apply prior learning, and work with local composers as mentors. Together, they will practice composition and arrangement, create unique instruments and pieces, and prepare for performances.

Implementation

  • From September 2026 to July 2027
  • The programme will run for 11 months in three phases

Phase 1:
Groove Meme In-school Demonstration Performance and Extended In-school Interactive Activity

(1 performance)

September to October 2026

To spark students' interest in percussion and the programme, the activity is divided into two parts: an in‑school percussion showcase and an interactive music session. Professional musicians will visit participating schools to demonstrate a variety of percussion instruments, introducing students to their unique sounds and features. Students will also be invited to take part in interactive games, where simple musical activities combined with live demonstrations by professionals will enhance their enjoyment and deepen their interest in music.

Phase 2:
Training Workshops (21 sessions) and Rehearsal (5 sessions)

September 2026 to July 2027

Based on the schools' facilities and response from students, the arts group will make assessment and choose the best training between the following options for the school on mutual agreement:

Percussion Workshop(10 sessions) and Theatre Training Workshop (4 sessions)  (total of 14 sessions)

By combining body percussion with drama training, students are systematically guided to develop a strong sense of rhythm and musical expression. Under the instructors' guidance, they explore the sound qualities of various objects and, through drama exercises, learn how to effectively integrate music with physical movement. This series of training enhances students' sensitivity to sound while fostering creativity, collaboration, and expressive ability.

Composition and Arrangement Workshop (4 sessions)

Through hands‑on practice, students gain an understanding of the differences between composition and arrangement, while mastering the overall structure of a musical piece. This process helps to enhance their creativity and strengthen their ability to express themselves musically.

Instrument‑Making Workshop (3 sessions)

Under the guidance of instructors, students collaboratively design and create unique instruments and musical works. They transform personal ideas into tangible creations, experiencing the full journey from concept to realisation and discovering the charm of music and creativity. Using designated spaces within the school as points of inspiration, students observe, connect with prior learning, and work alongside local composers as mentors. Through this process, they practise composition and arrangement while producing one‑of‑a‑kind instruments to enrich and perfect their finale performance.

Rehearsal (5 sessions)

To rehearse and prepare for the finale performance, students will be trained in percussion performance techniques, including dramatic skills, body language, and emotional expression. These rehearsals prepare them thoroughly for the finale performance.

(Please refer to Enrolment Information for venue, facilities and equipment requirements.)

Phase 3:

Joint-school Finale Performance (1 performance)

 July 2027

Students will participate in the joint-school finale performance at professional performance venue to share their learning outcomes with the public.
