About the Project

Where there are people, there are stories.  Many of Hong Kong's monuments, such as Kom Tong Hall, King Yin Lei and Haw Par Mansion, were originally distinctive private stately homes of prominent families.  They have long remained secluded from the outside world, with their interiors inaccessible to the public.  Nevertheless, the tales of these families' rise to wealth and greatness, love stories of their members, and the siblings' disputes over inheritance are often the public's favourite topics in daily chit-chat.  These families have played pivotal roles in Hong Kong's social, economic, educational and cultural development since its establishment as a colonial port.  Their stories offer an intriguing perspective on Hong Kong's legendary transformation from a small fishing village into an international metropolis, and provide profound insights into the Chinese social culture centred around families. This project focuses on the stories of Hong Kong's big families, featuring the conserved monuments that connect with their family lineages.  Through a series of innovative theatrical and cultural activities, the project aims to present, in an accessible way, the relationship between the development of Hong Kong's big families and that of the cultures of local communities.
