Highlights and Objectives

Contents

"Drum" is a traditional percussion instrument in China, deeply rooted in culture.  As a tool for communication, drums serve multiple purposes such as worship, reverence, warding off evil, celebratory dance, and even in warfare.  They permeate various aspects of social life, exerting a broad and profound influence.  "Dance" is closely related to "drums''.  Linguistically, dance is interpreted as an art form primarily characterised by rhythmic movements.  The beauty of dance lies in the rhythmic motion of the human body, and drums primarily express this rhythm.

The artistic expression of Chinese drums is composed of rhythm, tone, intensity and speed, giving rise to profound artistic characteristics.  The different forms and structures of drums, as well as variations in playing techniques such as striking different parts of the drum or utilising different methods, can produce rich tonal variations.  This programme aims to cultivate students' interest in Chinese drum music culture, learn drumming techniques, incorporate dance movements, and make drumming more enjoyable while experiencing the connection between drumming and body movements.  The programme will be a one-year drumming training programme on campus, with a focus on "Anhui Flower Drum Lantern" and "Jiangzhou Drum". Through demonstration performances, drumming training workshops, rehearsals and joint-school finale performance, students will gain a deep understanding and experience the connection between drumming and dance.

Phase 1:
In-school Drumming Demonstration Performance (1 performance)

September 2025

To arouse students' interest in Chinese drumming and the programme, an in-school drumming demonstration performance, to be performed by professional drummers, will be arranged for each participating school.  Students will be introduced to different genres of drumming and be invited to participate in live rhythmic games.

Phase 2:
Drumming Training Workshop (20 sessions) 

September 2025 to July 2026

Based on the schools' facilities and response among students, the arts group will make assessment and choose the best training between the following options for the school on mutual agreement:

Flower Drum Lantern
It consists of dance, songs, drama, and percussive music.  The training will emphasis on Chinese dance, gong and drum playing, resulting in a drum ensemble that combines music, rhythm, and body movement.

Jiangzhou Drum
The drum music of Jiangzhou, Shanxi, has been inscribed onto the UNESCO's list of 'Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity'.  The rustic yet richly varied drumming expressions impress with their robustness and awesome magnitude.  Training will be focused on rhythm and body movement.

Phase 3:
Rehearsal (3 sessions)

June 2026 to July 2026

To rehearse and prepare for the finale performance, students will be trained on performance skills, including  body language and emotion expression.

Phase 4:
Joint-school Finale Performance (1 performance)

July 2026

Students will participate in the joint-school finale performance at professional performance venue to share their learning outcomes with the public.

^Each student participating in 'Flower Drum Lantern' or 'Jiangzhou Drum' will have to pay $800 for purchasing a set of practice pad, drum sticks and textbook.

 

#Fees are on a per head basis.  All fees paid are non-refundable.


Enrolment Information

 

Application of  "Chinese Drum x Dance" Chinese Drumming in Practice Project Training Seminier for Teachers can be submitted online through the "Art Connect: Arts and Culture Platform for Hong Kong Schools" under the webpage of "Training Seminar for Teachers 2025/26".  Limited quota will be offered on a first-come-first-served basis.
