Highlights and Objectives

  • A school-year-long Cantonese opera training programme
  • Suitable for primary schools which are interested in Cantonese opera
  • Teaching four skills of Cantonese opera (singing, body movement, speech and martial arts) in an easy manner and enhances students' understanding and interest in Cantonese opera
  • Programme includes introductory performances, Cantonese opera training workshops, fringe activities and public performances
  • Participating students will perform at a professional performance venue

Contents

As a traditional regional genre of Chinese opera, Cantonese opera comprises art elements such as literature, music and dance.  This programme aims to guide students in understanding Cantonese opera and aesthetics of traditional Chinese opera, so as to nurture a sense of Chinese culture.

The play of the finale performance Wish you have a bright future is a story about parents in ancient time trying to pave the way for their children's future while the children would like to pursuit their own dreams, the series of incidents between the parents and the children will end up in harmony.

Implementation

  • From September 2024 to July 2025
  • The programme will run for 11 months in three phases

Phase 1:
In-school Introductory Performance (1 performance)

September to October 2024

Through appreciation and live introductory performances, students and teachers will experience Cantonese opera in an interactive manner.

Phase 2:
Cantonese Opera Training Workshop (30 sessions)

October 2024 to June 2025

Operatic Singing and Body Movement (15 sessions)
Students will learn basic performing techniques of Cantonese opera, such as vocalisation, stylised body movement and posture.

Bazi Training (15 sessions)
Students will learn fundamental skills with bazi, a widely-adopted stage weapons in Cantonese opera.

Phase 3:
Public Performance

June and July 2025

Community Performance (1 performance)
Students will perform Cantonese opera to the community members  in their neighborhood area, this provides opportunities for the community members to appreciate Cantonese opera and also develops students' sense of caring to the community among them.

Joint-school Finale Performance (1 performance)
Students will take part in the finale performance that will be held at a professional performance venue.  Students will be equipped with professional costumes, make-up, props and have live music accompaniment for the performance. 

Fringe Activities 

January to June 2025

Demonstration on Cantonese Opera Make-up (1 session)
Professional Cantonese opera make-up artists will provide an interactive demonstration on stage make-up.

Demonstration on Costume Dressing for Cantonese Opera Male and Female Roles (1 session)
Students will have a chance to dress up with Cantonese opera costumes of different roles.

^ Each participating school is required to pay $500 for cosmetics used in demonstration on Cantonese opera make-up session.
* Each participating student is required to pay $150 for purchasing of bazi and $100 for purchasing of base layer costume for finale performance.
# Fees are on a per head basis.  All fees paid are non-refundable.
