“Dong’s Campus” Literary Theatre Scheme (Completed)

Highlights and Objectives

  • a school-year-long educational programme on literary theatre
  • suitable for primary schools and special schools with a variety of theatrical experience
  • through local literature, students will not only encounter the content and discover the meaning behind a story but also learn about creative theatrical techniques used in performance.
  • programme includes a tour performance appreciation session, theatrical training and the final performance.
  • students will perform at public performing venue.

Content

The scheme is based on the award-winning campus novel Dong’s Campus by renowned Hong Kong novelist Dung Kai-cheung. The novel tells the story of Dong, a primary school graduate who has just started secondary school. Dong sees dancing mice in the Music Room, a forest in the library, migratory birds in the Geography Room and a grizzly bear on the basketball hoop. His fantasy world enlivens Dong’s dull school life but leaves him misunderstood by his classmates and teachers. What should he do?

Based on the novel, the arts group cooperates with participating schools to create the literary theatre text for performance and present it with innovative theoretical techniques. Each school will take up different sections of Dong’s Campus and create its own script in the form of a prequel.

Finale Performance

Programme Length

The programme is about 2 hours 30 minutes without intermission.

Tickets are available from May 27th onwards at all URBTIX outlets, on Internet and by Credit Card Telephone Booking

*Half price tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and the minder, and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients. Tickets for CSSA recipients are available on a first-come-first-served basis. Concessionary tickets holders must produce evidence of their identity or age upon admission.

The project will last for 10 months, from October 2014 to July 2015, and will be implemented in three phases:

Phase 1:

Touring Performance

October 2014

Theatre Ronin will visit each of the participating schools to perform the first episode of Dong’s Campus, with live music, puppet and specially designed costumes, demonstrating creative theatrical performance techniques.

Phase 2:

Workshops (16 sessions)

November 2014 to May 2015

Basic Theatrical Knowledge and Scriptwriting Workshops

Inspired by Dong’s Campus, the instructor and the students build on the story interactively. Afterwards, the instructor will complete the script/text for performance. In addition, the instructor will teach the students basic elements of theatre performance and help prepare them for their final performance.

Theatrical Art Workshop

Through the created script, the students are guided to apply different theatrical performance approaches. In these sessions, the students will learn how to make use of objects to tell the story. The instructor will guide them to produce some costumes and props together.

Rehearsal workshop

Undergo script rehearsal to prepare for the finale performance.

Phase 3:

Final performance

June to July 2015

“Students’ Performance for the Community”

Students will repeat their finale performance at social welfare organizations in the district of their school, so that the audiences who have no exposure to the theatrical arts can watch the play.

Finale Performance

The students will perform at LCSD venues to share their achievements with the public. There will be a sharing session after the show to allow the students to exchange with the audience and to share their creation experience and reflections.
