Programme Contents

The Imperial Trickster is a newly adapted comedy written by To Wing-sum Christie, a leading actor of the Hong Kong Young Talent Cantonese Opera Troupe.  The plot follows a "fortune teller" from Xinchang County as he investigates a case of theft from the imperial palace. Witty and engaging in its storytelling, the play is especially suitable for young audiences new to Cantonese opera.

Scholar Jin Dengke, a modest Confucian, leads a simple and contented life with his wife. By a stroke of chance, he is mistaken for a miraculous fortune teller and quickly gains fame. Around the same time, a bizarre theft occurs within the imperial palace. Eager to deflect blame, the court officials recommend Jin Dengke to solve the case. Through a series of bumbling and accidental twists, Jin Dengke unexpectedly cracks the mystery. The play's tight, fast-paced plot is both captivating and highly entertaining.
