Programme Contents

At the crossing of rivers, paths entwine yet drift apart

In a quiet border town between Sichuan and Hunan, young Cuicui lives a simple life with her grandfather, the old ferryman. One day, the arrival of two brothers, Tianbao and Nuosong, stirs ripples of love in her tranquil world.

Yet destiny brings people together only to let them slip apart. A single act of kindness leads to irreversible separation: Tianbao's death, Nuosong's sudden disappearance and grandfather's tragic accident. In one stormy night, all those dearest to Cuicui vanish. In the endless darkness, she chooses to wait and turns her longing into the sole candlelight, a stubborn yet tender glimmer that refuses to fade.

This poetic musical, adapted from Shen Congwen's classic novel, is co-produced by Chung Ying Theatre Company and Beijing DrumTower West Theatre. With the moving melodies of maestro Chung Chi Wing and the delicate direction of Roy Szeto, this timeless rural ink‑painting is infused with music that pierces the heart.
