This new edition breathes fresh perspective into traditional history. Through innovative performance techniques, the production reinterprets the original work to develop a more layered and poetic stage aesthetic.

The play is an adaption of the book of the same title written by Ray Huang, a renowned historian across the straits, in Europe and America. The director, Mathias Woo collaborated with Zhang Jianwei, the playwright of the historical play Towards the Republic, to develop 1587, A Year of No Significance into a stage play script that is to the most truthful of the original.

Little narratives reflect grand history - Through a year of no particular significance in the Ming dynasty, historical factors that would have affected China in the subsequent century are revealed with the integration of multi-media.
