M07 | ICH in All Facets: Workshop on Dough Figurine Crafting Technique


Session One: ICH on Screen: Guess & Discover

The exhibition series at the Hong Kong ICH Centre features three main themes: Hong Kong Festivals and Traditional Craftsmanship, Ordinary • Extraordinary, and Sam Tung Uk and Traditional Village Culture. Students will participate in groups on interactive guessing activities, allowing them to explore intangible heritage items including Hong Kong Cheongsam Making Technique, Guangcai Making Technique, Lion Head Paper Crafting Technique, and Chinese Dim Sum Making Technique in a relaxed atmosphere. The session also introduces the cultural significance of these items through engaging games.

 

Session Two: Dough Figurine Crafting Workshop

Nowadays, dough figurines are mainly found at festive stalls, street vendors, and crafts display. Dough figurine are remarkably diverse, with artisans skillfully molding simple materials into various characters or animal shapes. Themes often draw from folk customs, mythology, and contemporary figures. The technique has been inscribed on the ICH Inventory of Hong Kong. This session will demonstrate the making technique, introducing students to the materials, process involved and transmission. Students can learn about the artisans' exceptional craftsmanship and make their own dough figurine to deepen the understanding of local ICH.
