M09 | Conservation DIYparent

Programme 1: Artefacts + Science = Conservation

Science is essential for understanding the artefacts and their degradation mechanisms. Scientific analytical techniques can help conservators gain a deeper understanding of the artefact condition and develop appropriate treatment plans. In this activity, applying scientific knowledge in artefact conservation will be introduced. Students will experience fun and challenges of conservation work by creating plaster models and gilding with metal alloy leaf.

Programme 2: Copy and Paste: The Production of a Clay Print Libretti

Before the widespread adoption of photocopiers, copying Libretti in Cantonese Opera used to be in 4 different ways, namely hand-copying, and clay, stencil or stereotype printing. Among them, clay printing was the simplest and the most cost-effective method, and therefore prevailed throughout the 1930s to 1970s. In this workshop, students will learn the clay printing techniques and the common mounting method for paper artefacts in museums.
