During a visit to a nunnery, Man Pit-ching encounters Minister Fok's daughter, Fok Ting-kam and finds her double-phoenix hairpin.  To get closer to her, Pit-ching sells himself as a servant to the Fok family.  Ting Hon-sheung, Prince Hon's adopted son, who has no real talents and always wishes to get married with Ting-kam, is humiliated by Pit-ching at the Prince's birthday banquet.  Minister Fok orders Pit-ching to deliver flowers to Ting-kam's chamber.  Ting-kam's servant, Chau-wah promises to bring Pit-ching and Ting-kam together when he adopts her as his sister.

Learning that Minister Fok betroths her to Hon-sheung, Ting-kam fakes her death and flees to the capital with Chau-wah for Pit-ching.  Without news of him, the homeless Ting-kam and Chau-wah wander around.  Later on, the old Prime Minister Lau-king adopts Ting-kam as his daughter.  Her literary talent impresses the Emperor and titles her Princess.

Pit-ching, having topped the imperial examination, is summoned to the palace.  With his love for Ting-kam, Pit-ching refuses to marry the Princess despite the royal order.  Discovering Ting-kam is indeed the Princess, Pit-ching willingly accepts the marriage which irritates Hon-sheung.  To appease Hon-sheung, Pit-ching marries his adopted sister, Chau-wah, to him and requests the permission from the Emperor for a double wedding.
